Our Adoption Process
Thank you for your interest in adopting one of our wonderful dogs! At Healing Hearts Rescue, we take placing animals in their forever homes very seriously. Our process is designed to ensure the right match between you and your new furry family member. We appreciate your time and patience as we move through this process. It is our goal to make sure that you and your new pup will be happy together for years to come!
Healing Hearts Rescue adopts outside of the Twin Cities metro on a case by case basis however exceptions are not made for intact puppies or flight risk dogs. Potential applicants will need to provide a very detailed application to be considered and must be willing to travel to the Twin Cities for the meet and greet and often again to finalize the adoption.
Choose a Dog
Check out our adoptable dogs to find a match for you and your family. Adopting a new dogs is a big decision. If you aren’t sure which pup is a good fit for your family, email us or stop by an adoption event and we can help.
Complete the Adoption Application
The next and important step is to complete the adoption application. Please be as specific and detailed as possible with your answers, as they will help us help you make the best possible match. Once an adoption application has been submitted, a volunteer will contact you via email to talk about the dog(s) that you are interested in, ask any follow-up questions, and set up a time for you to meet the dog you are interested in adopting. Be sure you are checking your spam folder in case our emails get filtered there.
Meet the Dog
Once approved for a particular dog, we will connect you with the foster parent so you can set up a meet and greet. Many of our adopters meet dogs at adoption events or schedule private meeting with the foster parent. Depending on the situation you might also bring your resident dog along as well.
Home Visit and Reference Check
If all goes well with the meeting, the next step is to complete your home visit and reference check. We will have a volunteer contact you to set up a date that works for your family. The home visit is a check to make sure you are ready to welcome your new pup home as well as go over our adoption guide and point out any potential hazards such as gaps in your fence or go over leash walking safety.
Once all steps are completed, the adoption can take place by signing the contract and paying the adoption fee. Adoption fees can be paid through PayPal with a credit/debit card or with cash. New adopters should come prepared with a martingale collar, harness and two leashes to the adoption so they can be properly fitted by one of our volunteers for optimal dog safety.
